Providing around 100 care facilities, physician offices and clinics with a range of services, TDI’s operations also embrace four of the hospitals of its parent company, Inova Health System.
With two clinical engineers and around 35 biomedical engineers and radiology service coordinators, TDI’s remote actions are currently recorded by field engineers using a paper-based system. The information is then ‘re-entered’ by administrative staff, using several databases and software applications necessary to complete the required operational and business functions.

Wrights Dental, founded by Frank Halley Wright in 1911, has been a cornerstone of the dental supply industry for over a century. Headquartered in Dundee, Scotland, Wrights Dental offers over 30,000 products to dental companies across the UK, ensuring next-day service. Their extensive product range includes composites, anaesthetics, PPE, dental equipment, and digital imaging solutions. Additionally, they provide full surgery outfits, installing dental chairs, suction pumps, compressors, and more.
Hazel Upton joined Wrights Dental six years ago as the Technical Sales and Service Manager. She oversees a busy service department consisting of 12 administrative staff, 42 engineers, and an on-site handpiece repair centre in Dundee.
Challenge: Legacy Systems and Shifting Mindsets
Hazel saw an opportunity to enhance efficiency in the service department by improving processes. Wrights relied on email calendars to manage engineer schedules, a system that could be significantly improved to reduce errors and boost efficiency. However, many employees had over 20 years of experience at the company and preferred familiar processes.
Adapting to new technology required addressing this established mindset and guiding the team through the change. This led Hazel to Tesseract, a modern service management platform that offered them the flexibility they needed to improve their processes.
Solution: Strategic Implementation of Tesseract During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Wrights Dental partnered with Tesseract to modernise its operations and address existing system limitations. The implementation, led by Hazel in conjunction with Tesseract’s implementation team, involved collaboration with key employees to understand their needs and get their buy-in for change.
Wrights Dental used the downtime during the COVID-19 pandemic to thoroughly test and refine their processes and how they would work within Tesseract. The company strategically launched the system in January 2021, coinciding with a surge in demand for private dentistry in the UK. This timing allowed Wrights Dental to leverage Tesseract’s capabilities to optimise resource management, scheduling, and dispatching during this busy period.

- Remote Customer Access (RCA): To provide customers with visibility into their installed assets and associated certificates, Wrights began using Tesseract’s RCA portal. This portal allows customers to remotely view their assets, including equipment details and documentation, making it easy for them to self-serve and access the information they need.
